Can be used on semi-solids by pressing the probe against a moist surface.
Many Regular bulb based pH sensor have single junctions between the reference and bulk solutions, during measurement, ions flow between the bulk solution and reference solution. When the tris buffer is present (Trishydroxymethyl)aminomethane it causes the silver exchanging through the junction to precipitate and clog the junction preventing a stable potential reading. The flat pH design prevents the silver ions from exchanging with the bulk solution and is good for this type of measure. The flat glass is more sturdy than the bulb shaped membrane of standard sensors. It also allows determination of pH from smaller solutions like the moisture of the surface of solids like fruits, cheese, skin, or mud samples.
