The Wireless Colorimeter & Turbidity Sensor simultaneously measures the absorbance and transmittance of eight different wavelengths. The sensor can be used to study Beer’s Law (absorbance vs. concentration), enzyme activity, photosynthesis, and the rates of chemical reactions (absorbance vs. time). After a simple calibration using a solvent filled cuvette, students can quickly begin viewing live measurements as they materialize across the visible spectrum at 680 (red) 630 nm (orange), 590 nm (yellow), 550 nm (yellow-green), 515 nm (green), 480 nm (blue), and 445 nm (indigo) and 415 nm (violet).
This sensor also functions as a high-quality turbidimeter for water quality analysis. Rather than simply measuring transmitted light, the Wireless Colorimeter and Turbidity Sensor measures light scattered when illuminated at a 90 degree angle from the sensor. This results in accurate and repeatable measurements of particulates suspended in the water sample. Additionally, the internal housing for the cuvette is opaque, which limits ambient light interference to preserve accuracy. Use a 4 clear sided cuvette for best results on turbidity or at least expose the clear side or 2 clear/2 lined cuvettes toward the light source for optimum results.
When used with our EZ Sample snap vials for water quality testing, chemical concentrations can be determined using the built-in calibration curves for dissolved Ammonia, Nitrate, Phosphate, Chlorine and Iron. Values are reported in Parts Per Million (ppm) or grams per liter (g/L). These chemical tests follow USGS protocols for determining these ions in the field.
